Why a Slow Website Is Costing You Customers Right Now

Speed is not a nice-to-have. Every extra second a page takes to load costs you a measurable percentage of visitors — and therefore revenue.

The numbers are consistent across studies. Google's research found that 53% of mobile visits are abandoned if a page takes more than 3 seconds to load. Portent found that a site loading in 1 second converts 3× better than one loading in 5 seconds. Amazon calculated that every 100ms of latency costs them 1% in sales.

These are big-company numbers, but the principle applies at every scale. If you have 1,000 people visiting your site per month and it loads in 5 seconds, hundreds of them leave before seeing anything.

Why slow sites happen

Uncompressed images. A JPEG straight from a phone camera can be 6–8 MB. The same image properly compressed and served in WebP format is 200KB and looks identical on screen. Most slow websites are primarily slow because of images.

Too many scripts. Analytics tools, chat widgets, cookie banners, A/B testing scripts, ad retargeting — every third-party script adds load time. Some introduce blocking behavior that delays everything else from rendering.

Bad hosting. Shared hosting on cheap servers means your page is slow everywhere. A CDN (content delivery network) serves your files from servers physically close to your visitors, which cuts load time dramatically regardless of where your origin server is.

No caching. If your server regenerates every page on every request, it's slower than it needs to be. Most static content should be cached at the browser and at the CDN edge.

How this affects your Google ranking

Since 2021, Google's Core Web Vitals are a confirmed ranking factor. These are three metrics:

  • LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) — how long until the main content is visible. Target: under 2.5 seconds.
  • FID / INP (Interaction to Next Paint) — how quickly the page responds to clicks. Target: under 200ms.
  • CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) — whether content jumps around as it loads. Target: under 0.1.

Slow pages rank lower than fast ones, all else being equal. Speed is SEO.
