Chavica vs Building From Scratch: Which Should You Choose?

I built Chavica. I also spend a lot of time writing custom code. So when people ask me whether they should use a website builder or build from scratch, I try to give them the honest answer — not the answer that sells more subscriptions.

Here it is: it depends entirely on what you're building and why.

When to build from scratch

Custom code is the right choice when your website is your product — when the logic inside it is what creates the value. An e-commerce platform with complex inventory rules, a SaaS app with user authentication and data processing, a real-time collaboration tool — these require custom development because no builder will give you the flexibility you need.

Custom development also makes sense when you have very specific performance or design requirements that can't be achieved in a builder's constraints, or when you have an engineering team that can maintain it efficiently.

When to use Chavica (or any good builder)

If your website's job is to represent your business — to tell people what you do, build credibility, and capture leads — you almost certainly don't need custom code. You need a fast, professional, live website.

Consider the real cost of building from scratch:

• Time — even a simple site takes weeks of developer time, plus ongoing maintenance
• Money — professional developers charge hundreds to thousands per day
• Fragility — every custom dependency is a future maintenance burden
• Speed — you can't rank a site you haven't launched yet

A Chavica site is live in hours. It's fast, hosted on a global CDN, SSL-secured by default, and updates whenever you want without touching code.

The real-world breakdown

Restaurant, salon, or local service business? Use a builder. You need to be found on Google, show your menu or services, and take bookings. Custom code adds nothing.

Personal portfolio? A builder is almost always faster and looks just as good. Your clients care about your work, not your stack.

SaaS or complex web application? Build custom. No builder handles authenticated multi-user apps well.

Marketing site for a startup? Use a builder for now. You'll iterate your copy ten times before you find what converts. Do that fast and cheap.

The hybrid approach

Many smart teams do both: a builder for the public marketing site (fast to launch, easy for non-engineers to update), and custom code for the actual product. This is the right call more often than people admit.

My honest take

I built Chavica because I've watched too many businesses spend months on a custom site when they should have launched in a week and started getting customers. The code is not the value. The presence, the ranking, the credibility — those are the value. A builder gets you there.

If you're a developer who wants full control and has the time, build it. If you're a business owner who wants to be online and start growing, use a builder. The goal is the live website, not the method.
